HDTV to be launched in the UK

November 28th, 2005 · No Comments

The first nationwide high definition service will launch next year, BSkyB has said.

The company will use its current satellite network to broadcast high definition pictures on a range of channels, and will run HD versions of Sky One, Sky Sports, Sky Movies and Artsworld.

Programmes will include premiership football, rugby, movies and US TV dramas such as 24. The BBC’s coverage of the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany will also be HD enabled.

Users will need to obtain a new box to view the service, which will provide crisper pictures than conventional digital satellite. Consumers will also need to purchase a HD ready LCD or Plasma television.

Meanwhile, the BBC is readying itself for trials of the system in 2006. The broadcaster will run HD versions of its programs on digital satellite and cable. HD versions of Rome and Bleak House have already been produced.
