Mitsubishi anounced a new 52-inch model of high definition television that uses coloured lasers to create a dazzling display.

According to the New York Times, the images produced by the laser technology are said to be better than those seen in films.

The technology has developed from existing rear-projection televisions that used mercury lamps as the light source. Mitsubishi has replaced those white-light lamps with different coloured lasers.

All that extra technology will not make the unit any heavier. In fact, the televisions are expected to weigh about half as much as existing plasma screens of the same size.

A new laser HDTV television will be shown at the end of the week in California.
