Optiarc* has unveiled its BC-5500A Blu-ray reader for laptops. It’s a all-round drive which provide Blu-ray playback on top of regular DVD and CD burning and playback functionality. It’s available now, retailing for around $320. —- *Optiarc is a joint venture between Sony and NEC.

LG cuts price of players

LG cuts the price of its Super Multi Blu dual format player. The hybrid player that features both Blu-ray and HD-DVD drives has been reduced from $1,999 to $999. The reduction is possibly a response to Samsung??™s new dual format player, the BD-UP5000, which is being released this autumn for around $1049.
